The actress/director will serve as an executive producer on the film The Breadwinner, which will made by Oscar-nominated Irish company Cartoon Saloon.

The Breadwinner is based on Canadian author Deborah Ellis' novel about a girl who must disguise herself as a boy to land a job and provide for her family after her father is imprisoned.

Announcing her involvement in the project, Jolie says, "I am delighted to be working with a talented team of artists who I know will do justice to the richness,creativity and strength of Afghan culture and to little girls like (lead character) Parvana.

"Millions of young girls like Parvana are growing up today under oppression or conflict, and helping their families to survive in those conditions. This story is a reminder of the immense value of their contribution."

The Maleficent star will donate any profits derived from her role as executive producer towards the education of Afghan girls.

The film, which will be directed by Nora Twomey, is set for release in 2017.
