It looks like Sony have their sights set on a franchise as well.
There hasn’t been much buzz around the Spider-Man spin-off The Sinister Six over the past few months, but the film is still moving full speed ahead. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony is close to naming a director – the name in question will most likely be Drew Goddard, who was also drafted to pen the script last year. According to THR, Goddard is in the final stages of negotiations with the studio.
The folks at Sony hope to use Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man to kickstart a franchise.
The Sinister Six will focus on the main villains in the Spider-Man universe and is part of a larger effort by Sony to expand the world of Spider-Man on film. In December Sony also hired Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, and Ed Solomon to work on another spinoff, titled Venom, centered on the black-costumed villain that already made his big-screen debut in the third Spider-Man movie of the Sam Raimi trilogy. Kurtzman has been named as director for that project.
It sounds like Sony is also working on a franchise of their own to rival Disney and Warner Bros. The writers will work with Spider-Man producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach and The Amazing Spider-Man director Marc Webb to form what Sony is calling a “franchise brain to expand the universe for the brand and to develop a continuous tone and thread throughout the films.”
Meanwhile, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is due to hit theatres tomorrow, April 10 in the UK and on May 2 in the US.
