A new documentary produced by the BBC looking at the life and career of the late Amy Winehouse has been made available on the channel’s Iplayer service. Titled ‘Amy Winehouse In Her Own Words’ the doc uses previously unseen footage and performances to tell the tragic story of the singer who died in 2011.

The doc features a performances from a BBC One session the singer did in 2007, after her second album Back To Black made her an international name. Also included is footage from her appearances on ‘Later With Jools Holland’, her 2004 and 2008 Glastonbury performances and the 2004 Mercury Music Prize.

“We're honoured to pay tribute to Amy with a programme featuring exclusive unseen and rare footage from her performances at the BBC. Amy wrote smart, sad, soulful and original pop songs that became instant classics and inspired a generation,” BBC Music editor James Stirling said.

'In Her Own Words' also features a number of unseen interviews with the singer, many which were recorded as part of other BBC for documentary projects including the 'Jazz and Soul Britannia' series on BBC Four.

In one interview, Amy opens up about her relationship with former husband Blake Fielder-Civil and the effect it had on her album Back To Black. "I fell bang in love with someone and it didn't do me any favours," she says.

"When I split up with this fella, I didn't have anything to go back to. I wasn't working, so I was playing pool for four hours every day, getting drunk, having to be carried home in a wheelbarrow. So Back To Black is about a black mood, I guess.”

The release of the BBC doc comes just days before Asif Kapadia’s feature length film Amy hits cinema. The critical acclaimed documentary is released in UK cinemas this weekend, just over a month after it premiered at the Cannes film festival.
