Amber Heard’s former girlfriend Tasya Van Ree has spoken out in defence of the actress after it was reported earlier this week that Heard was arrested for committing an act of domestic violence against her in 2009.

The 30 year actress was taken into custody and booked for misdemeanour domestic violence after she apparently grabbed Van Ree’s arm during an argument they had at Seattle-Tacoma airport seven years ago. While the couple split up more than two years ago, Van Ree stood by her ex in response to the report that surfaced on Wednesday (June 8th).

“In 2009, Amber was wrongfully accused for an incident that was misinterpreted and over-sensationalized by two individuals in a powerful position,” Van Ree said in a statement that was obtained by E! News.

“I recount hints of misogynistic attitudes toward us which alter appeared to be homophobic when they found out we were domestic partners and not just ‘friends’. Charges were quickly dropped and she was released moments later.”

The report of the arrest – whatever actually happened – has come as some of Depp’s friends have rallied around the 52 year old actor, with Benicio Del Toro describing Heard as “manipulative” and comedian Doug Stanhope suggesting that this episode might be down to “blackmail” – the latter of which has caused Heard’s legal team to respond with a defamation lawsuit.

“It's disheartening that Amber's integrity and story are being questioned yet again,” Van Ree’s statement continued. “Amber is a brilliant, honest and beautiful woman and I have the utmost respect for her. We shared five wonderful years together and remain close to this day.”

Just days after Heard filed for divorce at the end of May, ending their 15 month marriage, she was granted a restraining order against Depp. Details of what allegedly happened between them have been trickling out ever since.

“Given the brevity of this marriage and the most recent and tragic loss of his mother, Johnny will not respond to any of the salacious false stories, gossip, misinformation and lies about his personal life," Depp's legal team said at the time. "Hopefully, the dissolution of this short marriage will be resolved quickly.”
