Tom Hiddleston Distances Himself From James Bond Role

Tom Hiddleston has tried to distance himself again from talk of him becoming the next James Bond, despite being one of the favourites to take the role. While ‘Poldark’s’ Aidan Turner took over as the bookie’s favourite over the weekend, Hiddleston has also had his fair share of money placed on his name, even though he has continually denied all rumours.

Appearing at the Wizard World event in Philadelphia over the weekend, Hiddleston was asked by a fan in the audience about the Bond rumours. “I’m sorry to disappoint you, everybody. I don’t think that announcement is coming,” he said.

“But I’m very gratified to hear the enthusiasm. There’s not much that I can say that I haven’t already said, but I know… Your guess is as good as mine to be honest.” Hiddleston became the Bond frontrunner last month when it was reported he had met up with director Sam Mendes and producer Barbara Broccoli in London.

However he later told Graham Norton there was no truth to the rumours.“The thing is the position isn't vacant as far as I am aware. No one has talked to me about it,” Hiddleston said. “I think the rumours have all come about because in the Night Manager I play a spy and people have made the link."

Over the weekend ‘Poldark’s’ Aidan Turner took over from Hiddleston as the bookie’s favourite for Bond after some ‘big money bets’ came in. "Money talks, and it's the Poldark man that punters want as their next Bond,” Ladbrokes spokesman Jessica Bridge told The Mirror.

"Turner's been shaking and stirring the betting for the last week and it's not a huge surprise to see he's been backed into odds-on.” Turner is now the 1-2 favourite to be cast, while Hiddleston’s odds have dropped to 2-1.

However Spectre and Skyfall director Sam Mendes has previously told fans that their opinions won't make a difference when it comes to choosing the next 007. “Barbara Broccoli chooses who’s going to be the next Bond: end of story,” he said at Hay Festival last week.

“That’s what she’s been brilliant at, and that’s how it’ll survive. It’s not a public vote, and I think we’re in an age where everything is deemed voteable on. Some things just aren’t and it’s better that way.”
