Could 'The Mindy Project' Be Headed To Hulu After Fox Cancellation

Fans of ‘The Mindy Project’ are understandably heartbroken over news of the series' cancellation by Fox, but things might not be over for the comedy yet. According to reports, the sitcom might soon be thrown a lifeline by Hulu and could continue on the platform for at least two more seasons.

Mindy Kaling writes and stars in ‘The Mindy Project’.

Word of ‘The Mindy Project’s’ cancellation was first reported on Wednesday by Entertainment Weekly, who learnt that Fox wouldn't be renewing the series for a fourth season. Ratings for the comedy, which ended its third season in March, were said to have been steadily dropping, at one pointing averaging just 2.1 million viewers.

But despite being critically acclaimed, the show had never been a big ratings draw, however it had always been popular on Hulu where viewers could watch the show’s first three seasons at their own pace. Now according to the The Hollywood Reporter, studio Universal Television is in talks with Hulu to keep the series alive for at least two more seasons.

Mindy Kaling, the show’s writer and star may have been prepared for the axe to fall at Fox, as she told THR in March she had written a cliffhanger for the season three finale because she refuses to "create under the assumption of failure”.

"I just think there are more stories," Kaling told THR when asked about the show’s future if Fox decided not to renew. "I do think there's more to tell, and I think fans would be disappointed not to see more adventures with these characters. But I came from a show [The Office] that I was on for eight seasons, and it continued for another year after that, so I am accustomed to long runs of television shows. I would be up for that challenge.”

Neither Hulu nor Kaling have officially commented on the show’s future, but the comedian did share a cryptic video with fans on Instagram yesterday. Accompanied by the caption, ‘Hey guys, I'm in Montana, is anything happening in LA? #themindyproject,’ the video showed Kaling winking at the camera, hopefully hinting that there’s some good news to come for ‘Mindy Project’ fans.
