Crombie died of a brain haemorrhage in New York City on Wednesday (15th April). His sister, Carrie Crombie, confirmed the news to CBC. Carrie described her brother as "funny" and "sweet" and counted his role in Anne of Green Gables as amongst the work he was most proud of.

"He was funny, he was sweet, he loved acting, he loved comedy and singing and dancing. As a little kid, he just loved Broadway shows and all of that kind of stuff and would sing and dance in the living room," Carrie said of her brother.

"I think he was really proud of being Gilbert Blythe and was happy to answer any questions... He really enjoyed that series and was happy, very proud of it - we all were," she continued.

Crombie played Gilbert Blythe, the love interest and later husband of Anne, in Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Avonlea and Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story. He continued his career on the stage, becoming an accomplished Shakespearean actor, and he was the lead in Drowsy Chaperone on Broadway in 2007.
