Idris Elba Returning As 'Luther' For Two-Part Miniseries In 2015

Just days after Fox announced a U.S remake of Luther and Idris Elba spoke of his desire to reprise his famous detective, BBC America has confirmed that the original iteration of the drama will return for a two-part miniseries in 2015.

Elba will once again don the flecked winter coat to play DCI John Luther, a murder detective whose genius mind can't always save him from the dangerous violence of his passions. The new series will be written by original creator Neil Cross.

In a statement on the BBC revival, Cross said, "Ever since we said goodbye to John Luther on Southwark Bridge, there's hardly been a minute when I didn't wonder what happened next. So I decided to find out. We're putting the band back together; Luther is coming back where he belongs. Back to the BBC. Back to London. And back to work."

The hour-long episodes will shoot in London in March, with a premiere slated for late 2015, perhaps close to Christmas.

The U.S remake has received a pilot commitment from Fox, with Elba attached to executive produce alongside Cross. It is not yet clear who will play the detective.

The new episodes of Luther was part of a big announcement from the BBC, which included a 1940s thriller called SS-GB based on Len Deighton's novel. Elsewhere, there's an adaptation of Joseph Conrad's The Secret Agent by Tony Marchant and The Dresser, a two-hour drama starring Anthony Hopkins.

The acclaimed drama Top of the Lake will return for six more episodes, overseen by Jane Campion.
