Here's a quick rundown of the winners, nominees and a brief analysis for the drama section of the Primetime Emmy Awards 2014:
Outstanding Drama Series - Breaking Bad
Breaking Bad was a fairly safe bet as typically the Emmys do honour highly successful shows for their final season and no show has been quite as successful or raved about as Breaking Bad. The series won the award over the likes of Game of Thrones, House of Cards, Mad Men and True Detective.
Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series - Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife)
She's been nominated four times in this category so it's not surprising Julianna Margulies won the award for her portrayal as Alicia Florrick on the hit CBS legal drama The Good Wife. It's the second time Margulies has won the Primetime Emmy Award for her role on the show and she beat off stiff competition including Robin Wright (House of Cards), Claire Danes (Homeland), Kerry Washington (Scandal) and Lizzy Caplan (Masters of Sex).
True Detective's Woody Harrelson or Matthew Mcconaughey both lost out to Bryan Cranston.
Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series - Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad)
Competition in this category could not have been fiercer with three heavyweight Hollywood actors vying with icons of television for this year's award. In the end, it was fairly predictable with Bryan Cranston taking the award home for his role on Breaking Bad as Walter White. It's slightly surprising neither True Detective's Woody Harrelson or Matthew McConaughey won as their roles have been critically acclaimed. Kevin Spacey's portrayal as Francis Underwood in House of Cards was also a strong contender. However, considering this is the last opportunity Cranston will have to win an award for his role as Walter White, it is fitting.
Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series -Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad)
Yet another victory for Breaking Bad, something which was to become a common theme throughout the evening, with Anna Gunn winning the award for her portrayal of Walter White's wife, Skyler. The other nominees included two actresses from British drama Downton Abbey, Maggie Smith and Joanne Froggatt, and another British actress Lena Headey from Game of Thrones. Christina Baranski (The Good Wife) and Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) also lost out to Gunn.

Game of Thrones lost out on numerous awards including Outstanding Drama Series.
Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series - Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad)
Breaking Bad's success continued with Aaron Paul receiving the award for Outstanding Supporting Actor. It was fairly predictable but was record breaking as Paul has become the only actor to have won the award three times. This wasn't an easy category either with the likes of Jon Voight (Ray Donovan), Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) and Mandy Patinkin (Homeland) also nominated.
Outstanding Guest Actress In A Drama Series - Allison Janney (Masters of Sex)
This is one category which could not have been easily predicted and the winner was certainly not the most widely discussed. Allison Janney won over the likes of Diana Rigg as Lady Olenna Tyrell in Game Of Thrones and Kate Mara as Zoe Barnes in House of Cards. Janney also won a Supporting Actress award in the comedy section for her role on Mom.
Allison Janney guest starred alongside Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan on Masters of Sex.
Outstanding Guest Actor In A Drama Series - Joe Morton (Scandal)
Whilst Janney's onscreen husband, Beau Bridges, was also up for this award he was not successful. The nominations included Paul Giamatti for his role on Downton Abbey, Robert Morse for Mad Men, and Dylan Baker for The Good Wife. However, surprisingly it was Joe Morton who took home the award for his role on Scandal as Rowan.
Outstanding Writing For A Drama Series - Breaking Bad ('Ozymandias' by Moira Walley Beckett)
If you're not starting to see a pattern now, you probably need to visit the opticians and, of course, Breaking Bad once again stole the show. The winning episode was not the only one from the series nominated as 'Felina', written by creator Vince Gilligan, was also up for the award. The other episodes nominated were from True Detective, House of Cards and Game of Thrones. All shows which repeatedly lost out to the AMC series.
Outstanding Directing For A Drama Series - True Detective ('Who Goes There' directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga)
We're were all slightly in shock that one award didn't go to Breaking Bad but True Detective held its own in this category even against other powerhouses such as House of Cards and Game of Thrones. Period dramas Boardwalk Empire and Downton Abbey were also nominated but, much as with the other categories didn't get much of a look in!
