"Turtles" And "Guardians" Dominate This Weekend's Box Office, While "Expendables 3" Is Just... Expendable

  • 17 August 2014

With the weekend almost over (sigh) it’s time for a box office report. Unsurprisingly for the middle of August, this one features a whole lot of guns, explosions and testosterone galore. Let’s start with Expendables 3, which despite ample promotion and a whole line-up of established Hollywood tough guys, didn’t really impress in terms of ticket sales.

. Just no.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, on the other hand, once again dominated the chart, despite boasting a similarly mindless, but well-muscled script. The franchise starter made around $28.4 million, according to early estimates from Rentrak, via USA Today.

Rounding out the Top 3 was the buddy comedy Let’s Be Cops, which had a respectable debut (for its genre) with $17,7 million over the three day period. It has totaled $26.1 million since opening Wednesday, even with an 11% "Rotten" rating on the aggregate review site RottenTomatoes.com. Still, not as bad as Expendables 3, which debuted with $16,2 million in fourth place. Permit me to end this article with a highly professional womp womp.
