Mary Lambert Is Putting Her "Heart On Her Sleeve" For New Album

When you hear Mary Lambert's name, it's only natural to first think of her feature on Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' 'Same Love.' The Grammy Award nominated track made her known worldwide, but the 25 year old vocalist has her own music that's dead set on making her an even bigger star.

Lambert's debut album, Heart On My Sleeve, is scheduled to be released on October 14 via Capitol Records. Since recording the iconic 'Same Love' track in 2012, Lambert went on to release a couple of EPs, and even independently put out a book titled 500 Tips For Fat Girls. She also just wrapped up a summer tour with Gavin DeGraw and Matt Nathanson, so you can bet that you'll be hearing a lot about the record in the next few months - and Lambert's got a lot to say on it.

"I have been terrifyingly honest to the public about traumatic events in my life. I met the woman of my dreams. I have been on the road nonstop, away from those I love, but with the opportunity to sing about gay rights to hundreds of thousands of people. This album is inspired by the depth of all of that love, and the journey that it takes to get there," Lambert said in a press release. On the aforementioned EPs, Lambert dabbled in a little bit of everything. Her first EP, Letters Don't Talk, was filled with somber acoustic/piano ballads, while 'She Keeps Me Warm' off Welcome To The Age Of My Body takes more of an Adult Contemporary route. 'She Keeps Me Warm,' which samples the chorus that she wrote for 'Same Love,' is far and away Lambert's most successful solo song to date, peaking at number 20 on the Adult Top 40. The upbeat nature fits Lambert well, and it's something she's apparently going to continue with on Heart On My Sleeve judging by the first single. 'Secrets,' released last month, is a straight up pop jam, but her ballads definitely haven't gone away as evident by the second track released from the record, 'When You Sleep.'

Perhaps one of the most intriguing aspects of Heart On My Sleeve is not what the songs sound like, but rather the lyrical content - and it's going to differ vastly from what's currently in the mainstream. “My goal is to bring a lot of these issues that so many people are already advocating for and talking about [into pop culture],” Lambert told Advocate Magazine. “Whether it's body dysmorphia or eating disorders or just coming out, or exactly being who you are." When Heart On My Sleeve drops in October, it may just be the perfect combination of upbeat and ballads, but either way, it's going to be talking about things that aren't being talked about in pop music, and what the record will be remembered for.
