What Will Be On OneRepublic's Re-Issue Of 'Native'?

  • 06 August 2014

OneRepublic has been everywhere the past year, and it doesn't look like that's about to change. In a couple of weeks, they'll finish up the U.S. leg of their "Native" summer tour, and they've also been promoting their newest single, 'Love Runs Out.' New music wise, the band just recently released their new track, 'Ordinary Human,' and they're set to put out a re-packaged version of Native with a couple of extra goodies.

On August 11, Native will be re-released featuring six previously unreleased tracks, as well as the aforementioned 'Love Runs Out.' Despite the song being the band's most recent hit on the radio, it was actually never included on the track listing to Native, even though it was originally planned for it to be the lead single. "I wanted it to be the first single, a few of us in the band did, but I could not finish the chorus. And you can't have a song without a chorus," lead singer Ryan Tedder told CapitolFM. Clearly, Tedder eventually found the perfect chorus, because the song is a smash. Now it finally gets the spot on the album it was intended to.

Other tracks, like 'Life in Color' and 'Something's Gotta Give,' will be featured on the new edition, as well as acoustic versions of 'If I Lose Myself,' 'What You Wanted,' and 'Burning Bridges.' The songs aren't exactly 100% new; they were all at one point featured as bonus tracks when Native was first released. However, the re-packaged Native should act as a nice collection for fans that may not have heard the songs yet, or want 'Love Runs Out' at a specific point in the album sequence (it's going to be track two).

What OneRepublic fans also got at the end of last month - something brand new and never before heard this time - is the original song that the band recorded for the upcoming film, The Giver. 'Ordinary Human' shows off the darker side of Tedder & Co., but it's still as excellent as OneRepublic singles tend to be. Where did the inspiration stem from? According to Tedder, it came straight from the movie itself. "They played me the movie and it inspired the lyrics, it inspired the music, the whole vibe," he said on The Today Show. While a movie soundtrack may seem odd for OneRepublic, it's nothing that they aren't familiar with: Tedder co-wrote Christina Aguilera's hit, 'We Remain,' from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire last year.

For those looking for a brand new OneRepublic album already, you might have to wait a little while longer. Tedder has reportedly been in the studio with One Direction to work on their upcoming album, as well as with Adele on her new music, too. Later this month, Ariana Grande's new record, My Everything, will be released with the Tedder-assisted track, 'Why Try.' OneRepublic wraps up their touring cycle in October, so it's safe to assume that they'll probably be working on new stuff by the end of the year. Until then, there's going to be plenty of Tedder around to keep your ears occupied.
