Jason Biggs' Apology: Will The Actor Tone It Down?

  • 24 July 2014

When does a joke stop being funny and instead turns into something downright offensive? Those that saw actor Jason Biggs' Twitter feed got an idea of what that would be after his comments regarding the Malaysia Airlines tragedy last week. Following the crash that took the lives of 298 people, the 34 year old Orange Is The New Black star tweeted out a string of jokes regarding the incident, starting with, "Anyone wanna buy my Malaysian Airlines frequent flier miles?" Immediate backlash was given to Biggs, who then defended himself, posting, "You don't have to think it's funny, or even be on my twitter page at all," and "Truly- you losers are literally trying to find s--t to get angry about. Channel your issues elsewhere." Eventually, the tweets were deleted and an apology was issued.

This isn't the first time that Biggs has offended the masses via his social media page. Although known for his typical raunchy and controversial comments, he's been known to take it a tad too far over the years. Just last month, he apologized for comments he made outside of Twitter on Joan Rivers' webshow, where he said that he'd rather save Lindsay Lohan over former American Pie co-star Tara Reid in a "live or die" situation because of Lohan's "nice boobs." "Tara's body—I don't know what's going on with it. I don't think she ever knows what's going on with it," Biggs said. This wasn't the first time he's apologized for body shaming Reid, however. Months earlier, he referred to her as a "hot mess," which caused Reid to call him out via her own Twitter.

Biggs has also landed himself in additional controversy regarding comments made about 'The Bachelor.' Known for live tweeting his commentary during the episodes, he offended quite a few earlier this year with his tweet about one of the contestants, Lacy Faddoul. Faddoul, who revealed on the show to have nine mentally handicapped family members, was the subject to a Biggs joke when he tweeted out, "I bet that girl who has 9 special needs family members lets them play with her big titties every now and then cuz what else right?" Additionally, he also mocked Bachelorette contestant Eric Hill, who died in a paragliding accident last April. "Crazy rule change- instead of voting off the contestants, this season #TheBachelorette gets to kill them off," he tweeted.

Although Twitter can be an excellent platform for humor and clever one lines, Biggs has proven time and time again that he hasn't learned when he has taken it too far. He's been incredibly successful with his American Pie movie franchise, which put out its latest installment in 2012, but he may be a part of his biggest venture yet with his role as Larry in the Netflix smash, 'Orange Is The New Black.' With the show's growing success, can the program really afford to have one of its main supporting characters bring such bad press? Biggs' wife, Jenny Mollen, is also fresh off the release of her brand new book. While Mollen is known for her crass humor as well, you'd have to figure that her name always being attached to his antics doesn't look very good.

Is this the nail in the coffin for Biggs? Definitely not. You shouldn't expect any punishment from Orange despite some on social media calling for his firing. Not only did Biggs apologize on Twitter, but he also made an appearance co-hosting talk show The View where he stated his apology once again on television. ”I certainly meant no harm; there was no malice, but I was stupid. It was poorly timed," he said. "I have nothing but sympathy for the victims and their families. I've learned my lesson, and I'd like to move on." Biggs is, for the most part, a pretty funny guy, and this is the first instance where he has genuinely sounded sorry for comments he's made. From now on, it's a safe bet to assume Biggs is going to think before he tweets when the next joke comes to mind.
