Who Won At 2014 Television Critics Association Awards & What Can The Results Tell Us About The Emmys?

The 30th Television Critics Association Awards (TCAs) was held on Saturday (19th July). The ceremony was held at the Beverly Hills Hilton in Los Angeles. With the 66th Primetime Emmys looming, have the TCAs given us some clues as to who is likely to win on 25th August?
Breaking Bad won Outstanding Achievement in Drama for the second year in a row.
Breaking Bad won Program of the Year, for the second year in a row. The program won the TCA award against stiff competition including True Detective, Game of Thrones, The Good Wife and Orange Is the New Black. Bryan Cranston was also nominated for Individual Achievement in Drama. The series has also been nominated for the Outstanding Drama Series at the Emmys; Cranston is up for the Lead Actor in a Drama Series Emmy; and Aaron Paul has been nominated for Supporting Actor. Whilst this is the last time Breaking Bad is up for an Emmy, it is up against stiff competition for Best Drama Series including Game of Thrones, True Detective, Mad Men and House of Cards.
Taylor Schilling in Orange Is the New Black.
True Detective, which starred Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey as Louisiana detectives, is likely to clean up at the Emmys. At the TCAs, the HBO show won the award for Outstanding Achievement in a Miniseries and also the Individual Achievement in Drama with McConaughey. At the Emmys, the show is up for Outstanding Drama Series and both McConaughey and Harrelson have been nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor.
Orange Is the New Black is nominated for 12 Emmys including Outstanding Drama Series. At the TCAs, the show was nominated for Program of the Year but losing out to Breaking Bad was no shame. In the end the show took home Outstanding New Program. However, the odds are definitely in the series' favour and it is likely to take home at least a few of the 12 Emmy awards it is nominated for.
True Detective won two awards at the TCAs.

However, Veep is also nominated in the same Emmy category as Orange Is the New Black and could prove a serious challenge for the Netflix newcomer. This was evident at the TCAs when Veep won, alongside Louie, the award for Outstanding Achievement in Comedy. Louie also won an individual award for Julia Louis-Dreyfus' starring role. Louis-Dreyfus is also up for an Emmy nomination, up against OITNB Taylor Schilling.
The Good Wife, which has been almost as celebrated as Breaking Bad over the years, also won the TCA award for Outstanding Achievement in Drama. Whilst it has become a staple on US television, it appears to be underestimated and there is a distinct likelihood of it winning in one of the three acting categories it received nominations in, including Lead Actress for Julianne Margulies, Supporting Actor for Josh Charles, and Supporting Actress for Christine Baranski.
