Gérard Depardieu alongside Jacqueline Bisset as Strauss-Kahn and his former wife Anne Sinclair. The movie was launched on the fringes of the Cannes film festival and sparked a frenzy for seats as festival attendees rushed for a first glimpse of the controversial new picture.

The controversial drama became the talk of the French festival, enhanced by provocative promotional stunts and a high profile lawsuit launched by an incensed Strauss-Kahn himself.

Although the movie and trailer begin with a disclaimer distancing the plot and characters from those of the Strauss-Kahn case, the former IMF chief has reeled in anger at his apparent portrayal.
The Film Has Attracted A Lot Of Attention After Dominique Strauss-Kahn Announced He Was Suing For Defamation.
In particular, Strauss-Kahn has taken issue with the film insinuates that he did rape chamber maid Nafissatou Diallo. The criminal charges were ultimately dropped, resulting in an estimated out-of-court civil settlement of $1.5 million (£890,000), but he will go on trial later this year with charges of aggravated pimping in a separate case.

Legal issues aside, Ferrara's film doesn't look like it holds back, with Depardieu revelling in a grotesque caricature and no shortage of outrageous behaviour.
Welcome To New York will be released in the UK on the 8th August.
