Dr. Strange Rumors: Prometheus Scribe Is On Board And Jared Leto Is Still Starring

For Marvel Dr. Strange isn’t that strange - the studio has put the thrusters behind more obscure franchises in the past. But that doesn’t mean it’ll be easy. Scott Derrickson (Deliver Us from Evil, Sinister) is apparently directing a screenplay written by Thomas Dean Donnelly, but as is the case with any Marvel property, the rumors are still flying around.

Just for a bit of background: Dr. Strange, born of the 1960s, is a surgeon that suffers a life-changing car accident and eventually heads to the Himalayas. Whilst there, he gains psychic powers and saves the day, protecting the Earth against magical and mystical threats. It’s a bit like Batman, but Strange actually has a non-earthly power to call upon.

Anyway, the latest rumor hitting the mill is that Prometheus scripter Jon Spaihts has been tapped to re-write Doctor Strange. This isn’t exactly something to get excited about. Prometheus was praised for a few things: the acting work of Michael Fassbender as the emotionally devoid Android and the visuals, mainly. It was criticised for one main thing: the story. And you know who wrote that. We just mentioned him. In addition to Prometheus, Spaihts has a project called Passengers that is now being developed for Keanu Reeves and not a lot else.

Mainstream audiences will care more about the face of Dr. Strange, and luckily for them, a spate of big names are currently attached to the project. Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch and Jared Leto, just to name a few. The latter has attracted the most attention, mostly because he’s fresh from an Oscar win and seems to enjoy taking non-conventional role. Although it’s looking like a lead role in a live-action Marvel film is becoming as conventional as you can get. (Deadline)
