Why 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding' Unqestionably Deserves A Sequel

  • 29 May 2014

As news surfaced only very recently that a sequel to 2002's hit romantic comedy 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding' is in the works, many begin to look back at the original flick, and rediscovered why it was so good.

The hit movie, made 12 years ago, followed a 30 year-old Greek women, Toula Portokalos (Nia Vardalos), who was beginning to panic due to being the only women in her family that hasn't yet tied the knot. The Portokalos', especially her father Gus (Michael Constantine), desired for her to marry a nice Greek boy, but she wanted to take her own route in life.

However when she did, Toula met Ian Miller (John Corbett), a high school English teacher, who is non-Greek. The rest of the film depicts the couple's strenuous struggle to be accepted by Toula's huge family and plan a wedding as they decided to spend the rest of their lives with each other.

Despite only having a $5 million budget, 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding' turned into a global sensation and earned a total of $368 million at the worldwide box office, thus becoming the highest-grossing rom-com of all time. It was also received the honor of being nominated for an Academy-Award for Best Original Screen Play.

So what made it such a popular flick?

Well, Time Out thought it's because "the result feels a little over-egged at times and the love match lacks chemistry, but Ian's whistlestop induction into a different style of language, food, drink, dress and dancing allows a few good one-liners."

Decent Film Guides reckons audiences loved it because of the movies' "endearing eccentricities, such as Toula's father's improvisational Greek etymologies of words like "kimono" and his reliance on Windex for a range of external-use medicinal purposes, help humanize the characters."

"The actors...bring out an attractive, warmhearted simplicity in each character. Above all, they portray a close, loving family, the film's ultimate and lasting virtue," added Movie Metropolis.

And the tainted sequel curse may be avoided in this case as Vardalos is returning, not only to star alongside Corbett, but to pen the script as well. The second instalment will follow the loud and rowdy Portokalos clang once again, a family secret will reportedly be revealed and a new wedding will take place, bigger and more manic than the first one.

Vardalos recently spoke of reprising her famous role to Variety. "Now that I'm experiencing motherhood, I'm ready to write the next chapter of my family story," she said. "Of course a few jaded folks in the press corps will claim I ran out of money or just want to kiss John Corbett again. One of these things is true." This is surely not to be missed!
