  • 18 April 2014

Johnny Depp’s latest movie 'Transcendence' has just been released and, well, critics aren’t exactly bowled over by his latest offering. Come to think of it, they weren't too keen on his previous endeavour, 'The Lone Ranger', either. Whilst it might be too early to say that Depp has lost his midas touch on the box office, we’ve got to wonder if he sometimes regrets the choices he’s made in his career. Take for example these 10 movies, whose posters could have read: 'starring Johnny Depp'.

Pulp Fiction

Quentin Tarantino and Johnny Depp have surprisingly never worked together, but Depp was rumoured to be one of the first choices for the role of Pumpkin in Pulp Fiction, which eventually went to Tim Roth. As for the possibility of a Depp/Tarantino collaboration in the future the director has said, “We’re obviously fans of each other. It just needs to be the right character. I just need to write the right character that I think Johnny would be the right guy to do it with.”

Ghost Rider

At one point Johnny Depp seemed to be the hot favourite to take the role of Johnny Blaze in the big screen adaptation of _Ghost Ride_r. This was until Nicholas Cage found out. Cage, a Ghost Rider superfan loved the original comics and made sure he let the right people know how keen he was on the project. Eventually Cage squeezed out Depp and landed the role but who knows if it would have really been that much better a movie with Depp in the lead.

The Hulk

When Bruce Banner was having his big screen moment as The Hulk in 2003, one of the names tossed around to play the green superhero was Depp’s. Depp was at one point said to be the top choice for the role, but the actor rejected the part and in the end Eric Bana was cast.

Mrs and Mrs Smith

It might be remembered as the film that brought Brad Pitt and Angeline Jolie together both on and off screen but Mr and Mrs Smith could have been very different. Depp was originally cast in the leading role opposite Nicole Kidman. Before filming began, he dropped out of the project due to being overworked from his other commitments. Kidman left soon after and then Brangelina stepped in. And we all know the rest.

Brothers Grimm

Director Terry Gilliam’s first choice to star in Brothers Grimm as Wilhelm was Depp and not Matt Damon. Producer Bob Weinstein, however had other ideas and thought that Depp wasn't commercially viable enough to take on the role. Interestingly Depp proved his commercial bankability when the film was in production with the release of Pirates of the Caribbean.

Sin City: A Dame To Kill For

Depp was most recently offered a part in the upcoming Sin City sequel Sin City 2: A Dame to Kill For as Johnny. However when the cast list was eventually announced, Joesph Gordon-Levitt was in the role. All hope for a Depp appearance in Sin City is not lost however as the actor is rumoured to have a part in the third movie if it ever happens.
