'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' Continues To Reign No.1 At The Box Office

Marvel's latest film adaptation, 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier', is still the main choice for cinemagoers in North America as it continues to reign No.1 at the Box Office after its record breaking opening last weekend.

The sequel to 2011's 'Captain America: The First Avenger,' and the ninth instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe earned an impressive $41.4 million in its second weekend of release, which now brings the film's domestic earnings to a total of $159 million.

'Winter Soldier' is also proving to be a huge success overseas and has raked in $317.7 million in ticket sales already.

The plot occurs two years after the events in New York City, and although 'Steve Rogers' is still struggling to adjust to the modern world, he is still heavily involved with 'S.H.I.E.L.D', even if he isn't convinced with certain aspects of their ethics.

Accompanying 'Captain America' (Chris Evans) is the returning Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), the leader of S.H.I.E.L.D Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford), 'Falcon' (Anthony Mackie) and 'The Winter Soldier', played by Sebastian Stan.

However, this weekend saw a much stronger showing from the other films than last week, with 'Rio 2,' a animated musical starring the voices of Anne Hathaway and Jesse Eisenberg, closely following 'Winter Soldier' but ended up coming just short by earning $39 million.

In 3rd place was the low-budget horror flick 'Oculus' raking in $12 million to beat Kevin Costner's new football film 'Draft Day,' which finished with $9.8 million.

Rounding off the top five was the sci-fi epic 'Divergent', adapted from Veronica Roth's novel series, which earned a modest $7.5 million.
