Wes Craven's 'Scream' Set For A TV Outing With Plot Details And Characters Revealed

It was the 90s slasher film that resurrected the genre and now it seems Scream is returning to our screens. No, its not in the form of a fifth movie, though that might come eventually - instead it's a one hour television pilot made by MTV based on the popular franchise. Now the plot and character details for the pilot have been revealed, so let’s take a closer look at Scream on the small screen.
Talk of a small screen Scream began in 2012, but it wasn’t until MTV ordered a pilot that the show got its green light. On board is Scream film director Wes Craven and writing will be Jill Blotevogel who’s worked on Ravenswood, Harper’s Island and Eureka. The series doesn't appear to follow on from the actual movies, who had their last cinematic outing in 2011 with Scream 4. The fourth film which saw Sidney Prescott making her return to Woodsboro, didn't do too well at the box office, having the second lowest opening of any of the Scream movies. It also didn't fare too well with the critics either, who found it all a bit dated. This new Scream will bring in a fresh cast of characters and tell its own version of the mask killer’s tale. There’s also been talk that the killer might be an actual ghost, after Harvey Weinstein commented that the show represented a new beginning for the franchise, which might take a supernatural direction.

_From the pilot’s plot description, uncovered by TVLine, there’s no indication of a ghostly presence, it simply states the show will begin with a YouTube video going viral, which will spell danger for teenager Audrey and serve as the ‘catalyst for a murder that opens up a window to [her] town’s troubled past.’
As for the characters, the three main teens we’ll be meeting are, Harper Duval, who’s an introverted and intellectual 16-year-old beauty who nevertheless has found herself in the popular crowd. Harper ‘feels guilty that she has drifted away from former best friend Audrey,’ who is described as an arty loner who is more interestingly, ‘the bi-curious daughter of a Lutheran pastor’, she also dreams of one day becoming a filmmaker. Audrey’s closet friend is now Noah Foster, who is ‘creative, brilliant and tech-savvy enough to be the next Steve Jobs’. He also posses an ‘an encyclopaedic knowledge of books, films, TV, apps, etc’, whilst having ‘great sense of humour (“a la John Cusack in his teen prime’. We’ll also meet Harper’s mom Maggie who has a _‘Gilmore Girls-esque relationship’ with her daughter. Maggie is the town’s medical examiner and ‘a grown-up science geek who plays down her beauty.’ She also spends a lot of her time trying to make up for the fact that Harper’s dad abandoned them and is also hiding ‘a dark secret from her past.’

_The four new characters seem to fit in well with what fans would want from a new Scream. Whilst emphasis is being given to the fact this is not a follow on from the movie, there are a few points that could connect it to the franchise. Even though its not been confirmed that the show will have a Woodsbro setting, the ‘town’s troubled past’ plot point suggests we may be making a return trip. Filming is expected to begin later this year, with a 2015 airing being look at. So far really things don’t look to bad for the franchise, who might just prove there’s still life left in it, if given a whole new story. Whilst the original movies were praised as much for their humour and self awareness as they were for their horror stylings, lets hope that’s one part if the Scream franchise the TV show choses to keep. Who knows, we might even hear ghostface ask, ‘what's your favourite scary TV show?’, here’s betting that the answer might just be Teen Wolf._
