Tom Cruise's 'Edge Of Tomorrow': Everything You Need To Know
Tom Cruise is back in sci-fi action epic ‘Edge of Tomorrow’, where he’s doomed to die, die and die again, as a solider who gets caught in a time loop fighting an alien race. The battle commences in June but the latest trailer has just been released, so are you ready for what some are calling ‘Starship Troopers’ meets ‘Groundhog Day’?
Much of the details of ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ seemed to be being kept under wraps until Tom Cruise and Bill Paxton made an appearance at last year’s Comic-con convention. Cruise took the opportunity to describe his character saying it was different that his usual on screen hero role. Indeed William Cage is actually a bit of a pretty boy coward who’s more used to rallying the troops than fighting, that is until he gets caught up in the alien time loop. Cruise also let out that as expected they’ll be an unusual narrative structure due to the time loop. Paxton also added that the movie does contain more comedy than you’d think, especially due to Cruise’s cumbersome looking exo-suit that he wears frequently in the film.

The next big hint of what was to come was in December when a twitter feed was launched for the movie. Here the fictional war, that will be depicted in the film, started being played out in the style of a journalist caught up in the action. Through it we were told that the ‘Mimics’ (the alien race) had already started their onslaught in France. We then got the first trailer, where the time loop premix was properly exemplified. We got to see that yes indeed Tom Cruise does get killed a lot and Emily Blunt looks pretty badass. We also got to see how Cruise becomes ‘not a soldier but a weapon’, as he’s taken in for training by Blunt. The effects looked pretty good and well there was plenty and plenty of action. Now the just real released second trailer has given us a better idea of the depth to the story and the exploration of Cruise’s character. Of course death on repeat is still the major plot point but now we get a better idea of how it will play out, with Cruise seemingly going one better every time. It also gives more credence to Paxton’s claim that there will be some comedy moments entwined in the plot.
‘Edge of Tomorrow’ certainly looks like one of the most action packed movies we can expect this summer and that in itself is an achievement. The main struggle will really be keeping the story interesting, since so much of it is based on repetitiveness. Still if they have found a way to tell a proper character story amongst the action and the ‘Groundhog Day’ plot twist, there might just be a place for ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ among the more anticipated summer blockbusters.
