NFL Now Wants $16 Million From M.I.A, But Will Madonna Help Out?
Mia’s issues with the NFL seemed like a minor incident, until it turned out that the organization was suing the singer for $16 million in damages. Now the singer, who has repeatedly mentioned Madonna as her willing co-conspirator in the Super Bowl performance that earned her the League’s ire, is also pointing the NFL’s lawyers in Madge’s direction.
The NFL is demanding $15.1m in "restitution" on top of the $1.5m (£900,000) they were already chasing for breach of contract.
According to the NFL, via The Hollywood Reporter, the additional charge is meant to cover “the alleged value of public exposure she received by appearing for an approximately two minute segment during Madonna's performance”.
So on Monday, Mia did the only logical thing and tweeted at Madonna, saying: “ummm ..... can i borrow 16 million ?”
Meanwhile, her spokesperson took a more practical approach to the issue, stating that the claim, "lacks any basis in law, fact, or logic."
Adding that the "continued pursuit of this proceeding is transparently an exercise by the NFL intended solely to bully and make an example of Respondents for daring to challenge NFL."
In support of this, the spokesperson listed various more explicit moments in NFL history, as well as a recent fine issued to a player found to have used racist language on the field.
