'300:Rise Of An Empire' Strikes Box Office With No.1 Opening Weekend

The sequel to Zack-Snyder's 2006 epic '300' hit theatres globally this past weekend and it seems cinemagoers have been equally waiting to see what the Spartan warriors do next, as '300: Rise Of An Empire' storms to No.1 at the North American box office.

Led by Greek general Themistokles (Sullivan Stapleton), the nation's residents attempt to join forces and stop the Persians invading their lands in an epic blood-thirsty battle as both army's commence the battle in a naval fight.

But do the mourning Spartans choose to join the rest of their fellow Greeks?

The sequel introduces a brutal and barbarous naval commander Artemisia (Eva Green), as well as Hans Matheson and also sees the return of Lena Headey, David Wenham and Rodrigo Santoro.

Coming in second place at the weekend's box office was the newly released animation 'Mr. Peabody & Sherman', starring the characters Rocky and Bullwinkle and depicts the time-travelling journeys of a dog and his adopted son, which earned $32.5 million.

Following in third position is last week's chart topper 'No-Stop' which raked in $15.4 million in ticket sales, and landing at the 4 spot was 'The Lego Movie', which features the voices of Will Ferrell, Morgan Freeman and Chris Pratt, plus many more.

Rounding off this week's top five is 'Song of God', which is also a historical based film, but this portrays the whole life story of Jesus Christ, from birth to teachings and finally his resurrection.
