In Fashion Terms, The Independent Spirit Awards Have The Oscars Beat

  • 02 March 2014

Tonight is Oscar night, which means celebrities are expected to amp up the glamour and sport the latest in couture for their trips down the red carpet. But at last night’s Independent Spirit awards, they were free to let down their hair (or sport the messiest of pixie cuts as the trend seems to be) and spread their quirky fashion wings. If you’re into it (who isn’t?) read on for a rundown of the best looks.

We can’t start a fashion rundown this season without talking about Lupita Nyong’o. Look, the woman just knows how to rock an outfit – she’s worn bright colors and neutrals, gowns and short numbers, patterns, prints and solid colors and she looks flawless (resisting the temptation to hashtag it). This time it was a silk crocodile-printed Stella McCartney romper which she paired with grey suede Casadei heels, a Devi Kroell clutch, and Neil Lane jewels. We’ll stop listing designer names now, but just look at the outfit.

Then there was Shailene Woodley. The new It-girl of the teen and YA movie genre has been rocking more and more youthful looks since chopping off her hair last year and we have to say – it really works for her. It doesn’t really get more indie-appropriate than a crop top and a maxi skirt, but Woodley’s Lyn Devon outfit gave her that I-didn’t-really-try-but-check-me-out-looking-fabulous vibe we all love in an A-lister. Points for creativity.

Ok, we have to. We’re throwing Angela Basset’s show-stopping red number in here. Not quite formal enough for the Oscars, it didn’t really have the hippie vibe typical of the Independent Spirits either, but just look at that dress. Anyone who can rock a bright red, cleavage-bearing bodycon and look this confident doing it has our vote.

Ming-Na Wen might play a badass, no-nonsense government operative on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but she had her boho on for the Independent Spirits. Wen rocked a turquoise maxi dress with bead detailing. She would have looked perfectly ready for a night on the beach, had it not been for her metallic stilettos, which added just the right touch of glamour to the outfit. Appropriate, given that the Independent Spirits were held on a Santa Monica beach.

We love Anna Kendrick. You probably love Anna Kendrick. Fashion loves her too. The Pitch Perfect star’s outfit was remarkably tame in comparison to some of the bolder choices, but she still looked edgy in an asymmetrical white Dior dress with a blue detail. Her nude Jimmy Choo heels and matching clutch completed the look.

Just for kicks, we’re throwing Jared Leto’s outfit in there. Leto is clearly gowing through some sort of hipster phase here, what with the ombre hair, checked scarf, leather jacket and boots and flannel shirt. We don’t even know what’s going on in this photo, but in all honesty… we don’t hate it.
