Woody Allen Versus Ronan Farrow - Controversial Golden Globes Tweet Causes Media Storm

Possibly the most entertaining part of last night’s Golden Globes (apart from JLaw’s red carpet shenanigans) had to have been Ronan Farrow’s live Twitter coverage. A particular gem was this one:

Farrow’s coverage took on a more serious note, however, when the journalist’s father, Woody Allen, took the stage to accept a the Cecil B. DeMille Award. At that point, Farrow hit a nerve. "Missed the Woody Allen tribute," Ronan Farrow tweeted, "did they put the part where a woman publicly confirmed he molested her at age 7 before or after Annie Hall?"

That was when Twitter (and all the news-hungry gossip blogs) exploded. Those unfamiliar with Allen and the Farrows’ complicated family history, however, may have missed the big controversy, so here’s the brief summary – as brief as possible, anyway. The tweet was referencing Allen’s adopted daughter Dylan Farrow, who accused the actor/director of molesting her twenty years ago. Dylan is one of two children Allen and Mia Farrow adopted during their marriage, alongside Soon-Yi Previn. She is the adoptive sister of Ronan (are you following this so far?)

The couple split after a twelve year relationship, following the revelation that that Allen was having an affair with Soon-Yi. (Soon-Yi is now his wife). That same year, Dylan came out with the allegation that Allen had touched her inappropriately as a child.

"I'm scared of him, his image," Dylan - who goes by another name now - told Vanity Fair in October. "I have never been asked to testify. If I could talk to the seven-year-old Dylan, I would tell her to be brave, to testify."

The court case was later dropped and according to Allen’s lawyer, Elkan Abramowitz, his client is still denying the allegations. That, however, didn’t stop Ronan and Mia Farrow from voicing their displeasure over twitter. Admittedly, Mia was a bit more subtle, simply tweeting that she was switching the channel before her ex-husband’s tribute.

While Woody wasn’t without his supporters, a large majority of twitter users sided with the Farrows in the media cold war.
