Box Office Highlights: What Are You Seeing This Weekend?

  • 30 November 2013

This holiday box office is already predicted to be a record breaker. With both Frozen premiering and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire in cinemas, both movies are on course to break the previous Thanksgiving weekend record, according to The Hollywood Reporter. For the Wednesday-Sunday period, Frozen is predicted to bring in around $90 million, second only to Catching Fire, which is holding steady in its second week of release with $100 million predicted earnings for the same time period.

Frozen is poised to easily beat the previous record for a Thanksgiving opening, which was set by Toy Story in 1999 with $80.1 million. It's also set to score the top opening for a Disney Animation Studios title, besting the $68.7 million debut of Tangled over Thanksgiving in 2010.

Catching Fire on the other hand, while it opened last week, is set to take the record for the top grossing movie on Thanksgiving (of all time) beating out previous champion Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone ($82.4 million).

In addition, with Catching Fire playing in 4,163 theaters across the country, it also easily topped the previous Thanksgiving Day record. On Thursday, the film grossed $14.9 million, surpassing the previous record holder – Toy Story 3 with $13.1 million. On a global scale, the film has raked in around $423 million so far. While people seem to be enjoying the dystopian story of the poor districts of Panem rebelling against the rich and uncaring Capitol in Catching Fire, as well as the story of a princess, rushing to save her frozen kingdom from the thrall of her confused sister in Frozen, not all premieres this week have done similarly well.

Spike Lee’s Oldboy is tanking at the box office. After a limited 583 theater release on Wednesday, the film might not even reach the $2 million milestone by the end of the weekend. From a script by Mark Protosevich, the remake of the cult South Korean film stars Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen and Sharlto Copley. ****

Elsewhere, The Book Thief (based on the Markus Zusak novel) saw an expansion into a total of 1,234 theatres Wednesday, helping it make it into the top ten by Thursday. On Thursday, the film’s domestic earnings reached $3 million, making it a real contender for box office success. This may be due in part to Twentieth Century Fox delaying the film’s release to make room for the highly anticipated Catching Fire.
