5 Celeb Couples We Didn't Want To See Split

  • 28 November 2013

A break up is rarely an easy time for a couple but ever get that feeling that some couples, i.e. NOT Rihanna and Chris Brown, were so well-matched that it was hard to imagine them not being an item? Yup, us too, so we restrained ourselves with a list of the top five celebrity couples we reckon never should have parted.

1) Zooey Deschanel & Ben Gibbard

What is love now that we are no longer in a world where the Zooey Deschanels can't make a happy marriage with the Deathcab for Cutie frontmen? Woe is us indeed. Him: the sultry, thoughtful indie singer and guitarist who is responsible for such odes to eternal love as 'I'll Follow You Into The Dark.' Her: the cute, funny and (dare we say it?) quirky actress who, with one flick of her indie girl bangs in 500 Days of Summer, launched an odyssey of shy, introverted teenage dreams against a backdrop of The Smiths songs.

Zooey and Ben were married in September 2009 but before they could drift off on their indigo cloud of indie bliss, the New Girl actress filed for divorce in 2011, citing irreconcilable differences and their divorce was finalised in late 2012.

2) Michael Sheen & Kate Beckinsale

Was it just us or was there just something too brilliant about this couple? After meeting on the set of The Seagull in 1995, the acting couple began an eight year relationship during which they had a now 14 year old daughter, Lily Mo Sheen. Though they split in 2003, the pair have managed to stay friends ever since, and Beckinsale has publically stated credited Sheen with saving her from "a hospital for the criminally insane."

Although Sheen never proposed, Kate claims to have felt like they were married, citing "If you keep a library book out long enough, you feel it's yours." Their 2003 split is attributed to Beckinsale falling in love with Underworld director Len Wiseman, who she subsequently married though she has claimed "He's absolutely one of my most favourite people ever," via The Mirror.

Sheen, who can now been seen starring in Masters of Sex alongside Lizzy Caplan, is said to be friendly with both Kate and Len and even attended a memorial service for Kate's father this summer. Life may be short but there's still time to get back together!

3) Miranda Kerr & Orlando Bloom

This recently announced split cut us pretty deep. One of the best-looking and most outwardly loving couples in Hollywood called time on their six years together; three of which were in marriage. Victoria's Secret model and Lord of the Rings actor Orlando Bloom seemed impossibly perfect, marrying just one month after Bloom proposed in 2010. The couple have an adorable 2 year-old son, Flynn, and Bloom would nervously appear on the Victoria's Secret front rows supporting his wife during the lingerie brand's fashion shows. In short: their love seemed so outwardly strong that their split came out of the blue.

When their split went public, it emerged that they had been living apart for several months but were staying friendly for the sake of their young son. "You know, life sometimes doesn't work out exactly as we plan or hope for, but fortunately, we're both adults, and we're professionals, and we love and care about each other. And we, most of all, love our son," said Bloom not long after their initial announcement. Sob!

4) Karen Elson & Jack White

Err...yeah, bit of an awkward one this one. We might have been sad to see the effortlessly stylish duo, model Karen Elson and musician Jack White, break up but what started out as an amicable split has turned into a restraining order filed against White. The couple married in 2005 in Brazil but they broke up in 2011 and even celebrated with a divorce party to break their union of marriage.

However problems allegedly arose when White discovered that their two children, Scarlett Teresa, 7, and Henry Lee, 5, would have been in the same school as Sadie Little, the daughter of The Black Keys singer Dan Auerbach. Who knows what White's beef with Auerbach is but he sent a furious email to his ex-wife describing the singer an an "a**hole" and expressing a fear for the publicity that could have been stirred up.

Elson sent emails to a judge saying that because of White's actions, she "fears for her safety and that of their children" and subsequently had The Raconteurs singer barred from "any contact with Karen Elson whatsoever except as it relates to parenting time with the parties' minor children."

We can dream.

5) Dawn French & Lenny Henry

The most perfect comedy couple pairing ever was torn apart when Dawn French and Lenny Henry announced that they were getting a divorce. The couple may not be as famous worldwide as some of their celebrity counterparts on this list but their 2010 split rocked the boat after an impressive 25 years of marriage.

The pair met in the eighties whilst on the London comedy circuit and married in 1984, adopting a daughter Billie in 1991 and moving into a massive Cornish mansion as both performers careers took off. Their divorce was announced and finalised in 2010 but there reportedly had been problems for some time. If laughter is said to be music for the soul and the key to someone's heart well, we just can't fathom what could have happened.

Of course, there are plenty more couples we could name - anyone ever linked to Johnny Depp or Leonardo DiCaprio for a start - but we'd be in danger of ruining our own day with such woeful tales of separation. Pass the tissues!
