Everyone knows the story of Noah, whether religious or not, virtually everyone is familiar with the man who received a warning from God that a flood was coming and built a giant ark to save two of every species and his family. Director Darren Aronofsky's biblical epic has been rumoured for some time but now we have visual proof that Noah will be released next year.

But what have we learned about Noah from the new trailer?

Aside from awe-inspiring cinematography, what else have we learned from the Noah trailer?

Russell Crowe will take on the titular hero who, for some reason, is picked out by God to save all the world's creatures by building an ark to protect them when a flood is sent to purge the world of evil people. Jennifer Connelly will star as his wife, Naameh, whilst Anthony Hopkins will star as Methuselah with Emma Watson, Logan Lerman and Kevin Durand in supporting roles.

Rather than a peacefully religious man, as might be more the depiction at Sunday School, Crowe's Noah is a warrior on a mission for survival in a world of savagery and evil. However, otherwise Noah appears to stick very well to the Old Testament story without being watered down and mixed with the same old Hollywood pitfalls of romance, comedy or unnecessary horror.

Will there be more Aronofsky bible adaptations?

In the trailer, we see snatches of snakes, apples, burning bushes, and Moses-style fireball plagues which could indicate that if Noah triumphs at the box office, the Black Swan director may set to work bringing the other well-loved Bible tales to life.

Darren Aronofsky Appears To Have Chosen A Western Take On The Story Of Noah.

It isn't set in the Middle East. Though many of the Bible's stories are set in the mountains and deserts of Asia, Aronofsky seems to have situated his movie in what looks like a leafy European setting with what looks like Pictish tribes waging war against each other.

A Western Take?

The cast appears to be predominantly white with middle English accents; a choice that could prove to be controversial. We see snakes swarming, bees buzzing and lions lumbering into the ark en masse which we can already tell will form the spine-tinglingly stirring climax of the movie as Noah and his family race to save the Earth's wildlife.

The animals may have come in two-by-two but this kind of film only comes around once: make sure you don't miss it. Noah will be released on the 28th March 2014.
