Following Christopher Nolan's 'Dark Knight' trilogy and the recent Superman epic 'Man Of Steel', there seems to be one obvious direction to go in next for DC Comics with their film franchises: a Wonder Woman movie, of course. The Amazonian knockout was first portrayed successfully by Lynda Carter in the TV series between 1975 and 1979, and it hasn't yet been put to cinema neither as a solo project for the character nor as a Justice League of America set-up. There have been all sorts of rumours flying about recently with Jaimie Alexander talking a lot about the supposed upcoming Wonder Woman movie and we've got pretty excited discussing who might be considered for the role.
So, who do we think would do the Wonder Woman costume 'justice'?
Jaimie Alexander: The 'Thor' actress has set tongues wagging as she gushed about the character in an interview with Forbes. 'I would love for DC to put Wonder Woman in one of their upcoming flicks, either in her own movie or Batman vs. Superman, or just something even to introduce her', she said. Batman vs. Superman, hmm? Does she know something we don't? On the suggestion that she could be the one to play her, she insisted, 'I'm appreciative to the people who ask my opinion of the character, and that's been pretty amazing.' Jaimie would be perfect for the role given her portrayal of Asgardian strong-woman Sif in the 'Thor' movies, and she even bears an interesting resemblance to Lucy Lawless as 90s TV hero Xena, Warrior Princess.
Gina Carano: Former MMA fighter Carano is another one definitely being rumoured to play the role and it's not hard to see why people would see she's made for it. She's certainly beautiful, but more importantly she's built like a comic star having been in the Women's Middleweight division while practising Muay Thai in her sporting career. She's relatively new to acting, but she impressed critics in the lead role of Steven Soderbergh's action movie 'Haywire' and showed a real badass side in 'Fast & Furious 6' while fighting Michelle Rodriguez. Given her feminine but strong presence, Carano wouldn't struggle getting into the mind of someone like Wonder Woman.
Amber Heard: Probably not an obvious choice given her previous movies, but we think Amber Heard could be pretty formidable as DC's most-loved heroine. She was mean as a gun-toting undercover beauty star in Robert Rodriguez's 'Machete Kills' and she has remarkably good facial proportions, however there would have to be a little bulking up to do as Wonder Woman ain't gonna be fighting any supervillains with such a slender physique. She's generally a great icon for such a strong, feminine role as well as she has a genuine interest in guns, muscle cars and a fierce view on sexuality and her own sexual orientation. Girl power!
Alice Eve: Jumping on the bandwagon of shipping UK actors to Hollywood to take over the major comic book roles (think Henry Cavill as Superman, Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man and Tom Hiddleston as Thor's villainous brother Loki), we're putting forward Alice Eve as another possible. She has a delicate grace about her that certainly suits the innocence of the character's secretary alter-ego Diana Prince to the T, and yet she displays a very convincing personal strength as Lieutenant Dr. Carol Marcus in 'Star Trek Into Darkness' - a movie which also sees her show off some impressive abs in her 'underwear scene'.
Katy Perry: Okay, we know it's a long shot, but busty Katy Perry would suit that famous blue, red and gold skimpy outfit so well! She's beautiful, adored and is already Wonder Woman to many people with her Twitter account superseding Justin Bieber as the most followed on the internet. She's got the long dark hair, fabulous curves and the video for her hit single 'Roar' shows she knows a thing or two about Amazonian muscle. 'Can she act, though?' I hear you cry! Well, she's certainly open to it having appeared in episodes of 'Raising Hope' and 'How I Met Your Mother', and voicing Smurfette in 'The Smurfs' films.
Rosario Dawson: We know she doesn't look like Lynda Carter in any way shape or form, but Rosario Dawson has an exotic charm that we think is just right for Wonder Woman - after all, the heroine did not have American heritage as she was born on the island of Themyscira. Dawson has also previously played a Goddess in the film 'Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief' - Wonder Woman might not be divine, but she's worshipped as a Princess in her homeland. Curiously, Dawson has previously displayed an interest in the character having had a voice role in the 2009 animated movie; alas, she was actually Artemis, but the connection is still there.
**Jennifer Lawrence:** She might already be playing blue babe Mystique in Marvel flick 'X-Men: Days of Future Past', but it would be awesome if DC could borrow this Oscar winner for the strongest female character ever. She knows the drill with comic films now so it's not like she'd struggle getting into the vibe, and she plays an amazingly strong heroine in 'The Hunger Games' series so if that doesn't prove she's got what it takes for the role then I don't know what does. She's not too skinny either (as everyone, indeed, keeps reminding her but we love her figure) so she can definitely hold the muscle it takes to become Wonder Woman.
Rachel McAdams: Rachel McAdams is a natural beauty with a girlish charisma - exactly what made Lynda Carter so popular in the superhero role. We know she can be mean too, as she's not the sort of girl you want to mess with in 'Mean Girls' and 'Passion'; movies which see her characters use their manipulative powers to get what they want. She also played a femme fatale kind of character in 2009's 'Sherlock Holmes'. We know it's not exactly what Wonder Woman is all about but McAdams certainly knows how to make a female character seem formidable.
Juno Temple: Another English actress we think could fill the role well. She's a hit in Hollywood at the moment and has a diversity about her in terms of acting that means she could pull off almost any role. I mean, she would probably have to darken her hair but she's another actress with comic book connections having appeared as the street smart accomplice of Selina Kyle in 'The Dark Knight Rises'.
Rachel Bilson: Remember when Rachel Bilson set the internet ablaze with her Wonder Woman costume in that episode of 'The O.C.'? Well, we, like the rest of the world, thought she looked incredible and we can't blame the press for suggesting that she would portray the character in a movie adaptation. She has the right beauty queen look about her after all and that costume would still look incredible ten years on.
Hayden Panettiere: Hayden has already had a taste of what being a superhero could be like after her portrayal of regenerating cheerleader Claire Bennet in 'Heroes' so she could be among the favourites with the Comic Con goers. Wonder Women would be a great way to break the blonde cheerleader typecast as well, especially if she was forced to dye her golden locks. The more obvious reason for tipping her for the role is that she's incredibly stunning and is exactly the kind of beauty that would be expected for such a part.
Megan Fox: Megan Fox is the kind of woman that most boys have posters of in their bedroom, ergo if she became Wonder Woman in a film adaptation, there probably won't be many males resisting the urge to watch it. It makes her a good choice commercially but the fact that she's a comic book fan would bring a lot of enthusiasm and knowledge to the role. She's played a few badass roles as well; she wasn't exactly a squealing wimp in the 'Transformers' films and she was damn scary as a super-demon in 'Jennifer's Body', plus she definitely knew how to fight back in 'Jonah Hex'. There's a lot of scepticism about her ability to pull off a role like Wonder Woman - but we're not going to make any pre-judgements just yet; after all, she's already been picked to play the leading female role in another famous comic book franchise - the remake of 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' due out next year.
Allison Williams: Comic book films often give not so well-known actors a chance and since Allison Williams joined the cast of HBO series 'Girls', there is a great chance that she's going to bag a blockbuster some time soon. We think she would just look so right in the role of Wonder Woman; dark hair, a strong jawline and a dazzling smile that would charm anyone.
Alexandra Daddario: Another 'Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief' hero, Alexandra Daddario would be utterly enchanting as Wonder Woman. Busty and athletic, she's got a near perfect shape to fit the part and her intense blue eyes would be an asset difficult to replicate. As we flicked through a few comic book versions of the character, the resemblance between Ms. Daddario and the comic images was striking.
There were a few others we thought about listing as possible contenders. Thinking over the Amazon theme, we thought a Hispanic actress would do the job beautifully; for example Penelope Cruz, Sofia Vergara or Eva Mendes; but decided that our suggestions, although would look stunning in the role, were really a little too far on in years to get involved in the next DC project. Christina Hendricks was another idea with her famously curvy figure being a prime quality for the role, and Marion Cotillard's gorgeous facial features made us think of her, but, at 38, the same could be said here.
We also scrapped Emily Blunt and Amanda Seyfried after a while because, while they may make a killing for the movie commercially, we decided that our chosen few would be more convincing.
