Joaquin Phoenix Falls In Love With EWoman In 'Her' [Trailer + Pictures]
In Her, Spike Jonze’s highly anticipated new movie, Joaquin Phoenix plays Theodor – a recently divorced man living city life alone until a new piece of technology enters his life: Samantha (Scarlett Johansson).
Samantha is a computer program: a Siri-like entity that accompanies Theodor in his professional and personal life. Their relationship soon turns from user/product to a more romantic one, as our protagonist falls in love with his new toy.
This charming love story comes as Jonze’s reputation is on a high; his repertoire so far includes Being John Malkovich and Where The Wilds Are, so Her will be yet another departure in style; it’s highly unlikely to be a departure in quality, though.
The film is set in the not too distant future, and provides an insight, from the brain of Jonez at least, into what the future of technology holds, something that was explored in Channel 4’s Black Mirror not so long ago. "What does a baby computer call its father?" Phoenix asks Samantha, before answering his own joke: "Data". (American accent required)
Again, Phoenix portrays the lonely outsider, something he did so unnervingly and successfully in Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master. And like The Master, Phoenix is likely to be overlooked when it comes to Oscar contention. He did receive a nomination last year, but his comments about The Academy might rule him out for a few years at least.
Her, which also stars Olivia Wilde, Amy Adams and Rooney Mara, is set for a November 20th release date. And with most of Hollywood’s most beautiful women on board, it’s not clear which one the film’s title is referring to.
