The LA-born star married his second and current wife, Lisa, in 1980 and the pair have four children together in addition to Hoffman's two children from his previous marriage. Born into a Jewish family, father Dustin says that he has certainly become more religious as he has aged and each of his four most recent children have had their bar or bat mitzvahs.

It was not publicised whether Hoffman had been recently ill with cancer but the acclaimed performer has kept himself busy, having been last seen on set of the food truck comedy, Chef, that is set for release in May next year. He'll star alongside Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr. and Sophía Vergara in Chef and is preparing to shoot Roald Dahl adaptation Esio Trot this Autumn with Dame Judi Dench.

Chef will be released on 9th May 2014.
