2013 ESPY Awards: Serena Williams, The Hoyts And LeBron James Amongst Winners
The 2013 ESPY Awards (short for Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Award) were held last night. They were held on Wednesday 17th July at the Nokia Theater in L.A. The ESPYs is an ESPN network award ceremony, intended to recognise the achievements of an individual athletic or team from the world of sport. The guest list was not limited to celebrities from the world of sport as many actors and musicians attended.
Tennis player Maria Sharapova presented awards alongside Robin Thicke's wife, actress Paula Patton. Selena Gomez also attended, stunning the crowd gathered outside the theatre, in an embellished scarlet dress.
Attendees from the world of sport included Australian dancer Peta Murgatroyd; US football coach Bruce Arians; Baseball's Daniel Rodriguez; Paralympian Shirley Riley and skier Bode Miller.
Also awarded for his Olympic achievement was swimmer Michael Phelps, he won the award for Best Record-Breaking performance. This is the second time he has won the award. His record-breaking refers to the athlete's 22 Olympic medals.
The award presentation for the father-son team Dick and Rick Hoyt was one of the most touching moments of the ESPY's ceremony. Together the Hoyts have raced in over 1000 endurance events. 73-year-old Dick pushes his son Rick in 5 and 10km races around the world. Rick was born with cerebral palsy and is unable to use his hands or legs. They were awarded the Jimmy V Award For Perseverance which was presented to them by Ben Affleck.
