Guillermo Del Toro Urges Moviegoers To See The Romance In "Pacific Rim"
While at first glance Pacific Rim is a film about aliens and giant robots (not that there’s anything wrong with that), director Guillermo Del Toro is keen to point out that that’s not all this film is about. The helmer of the high-budget sci-fi flick wants audiences to know that there will is, in fact, a romantic side to the alien invasion (sort of.) Speaking at the film’s premiere in London this week, Del Toro said for the Metro: ‘‘It’s a really romantic, huge adventure movie serving as a backdrop for two of the best science-fiction sub-genres rendered in a way and a scale that they have never been rendered before.’
Ok, so romantic might not be the most accurate description, but it sounds like most sci-fi fanatics would be able to understand Del Toro’s sentiment. The director also sung the praises of his cast, featuring, in the two main roles, breakout stars Idris Elba and Charlie Hunnam – both of whom have already received nods from a number of critics for their performances. Del Toro himself has received perhaps the highest honor – a tweet for Yeezus himself.

But West wasn’t the only one praising the director. The cast of Pacific Rim only had nice things to say at the premiere. Torchwood star Burn Gorman, who plays Dr Herman Gottlieb in the film, said: “When Guillermo Del Toro asks you to work on something, you consider it for about a second and then you just get in there. He’s a creative genius in terms of the expertise that he brings to the practical and the moviemaking process so it was a wonderful experience I’m glad to part of.”
The results of Del Toro’s direction will be revealed next Friday, July 12, when the film hits cinemas across the US and UK.
