Angelina Jolie To Follow-Up Mastectomy With Operation To Remove Ovaries

Angelina Jolie announced earlier this week that she underwent a double mastectomy in a preventative move to avoid developing breast cancer in the future. The operation was a complete success and lowered her chances of developing cancer dramatically; and now the Oscar winner is looking to have a similar, intrusive surgery on her ovaries in another preventative move.

People reported late yesterday (May 15) that the brave actress hasn't finished warning off cancer just yet, with surgery to remove her ovaries planned for the near future. Because Jolie carries the BRCA1 gene, her chances of developing breast cancer were at a dangerously high level, with the chances of her developing cancer of the ovaries at an equally high percent; with doctors estimating her chances of developing the disease standing at 50 percent currently.

Doctors recommend that these types of procedures be only performed on women under 40, or when a woman is finished having children (and with six already we assume that she's done by now), and though the procedure may trigger an early menopause, like the mastectomy treatment it will greatly lower her chances of developing cancer. However, following the severity of her last series of operations, Jolie will put off having the surgery for now so that life back home can return to normality.

That said, according to family insiders also speaking with People, Jolie and her husband Brad Pitt have not let their brood fall behind while the actress and activist concentrates on her own health. During the surgery period, which began in February and ended in April, "life was normal" in the Pitt-Jolie household, with Valentine's Day gift exchanges and an Easter egg hunt taking place despite Jolies condition. The insider added, "Her kids always come first to her."
