Polly Paulusma - Dark Side - Single Review
Polly Paulusma
Dark Side
5th April 2004
Whatever it is that is in the air this year, encouraging female singer-songwriters everywhere to crawl out the woodwork and unleash their material on the awaiting music-loving public, remains a mystery, but it's certainly something that there is a lot more in supply of, to intrigue the likes of Carina Round and Norah Jones to stay around as long as old hats, PJ Harvey and Tori Amos.
Polly's distinctive vocals and melodic acoustic guitars, grabs you and reelsyou in before you can even begin to swim away, as vocally she rings true of classicssuch as Joni Mitchell and Carole King, yet with a unique contemporary edge.
It therefore comes as no surprise to hear that record label One Little Indiansnapped this impressive new talent up within a mere week of hearing her demomaterial. This put paid to her ideas to be a journalist, researcher, or novelist, encouraging her to put her English Degree to creative use as a singer-songwriter. "DarkSide," which featured on that original demo, has now made it's way ontodebut album (Scissors in My Pocket) for all to hear it's captivating nature, you cannot argue that Polly is an insightful and enchanting story teller.
Dark Side is released 5th April 2004 on One Little Indian Records
