Lynyrd Skynyrd - Gimme Back My Bullets Album Review

  • 20 February 2006

Artist - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Album - Gimme Back My Bullets
Label - Universal

You probably already know whether you like Lynyrd Skynyrd, the archetypal Southern Rock band, whose Freebird is so popular it has entered the Stairway To Heaven overplayed stakes. To coincide with the band's induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March, this album sees re-release, together with a live DVD. An interesting choice for re-release, this 1976 album is one that fans of the band fight over most - some claiming it among their best, some quite the opposite. The band had lost their principal guitarist/ songwriter by the time of this record, but the Allman Brothers-influenced duelling leads and straightahead blues rock and swampy Creedence boogie are still compelling. There isn't a Sweet Home Alabama here, nor a Freebird, but the whole does hang together well.
