Neko Case is something of a cult artist, with stints in The New Pornographers alongside her somewhat patchy solo work. Here she gives vent to her full country leanings, with a piece that Patsy Cline would be happy with. Retaining the credibility of her power pop side project, Fox Confessor is almost perfect from start to finish - Case's voice has never sounded better, like a cross between Maria McKee and Loretta Lynne, and the songs are lush, plaintive and joyful. This is easily her best album, and a great recommendation for anyone looking for somewhere to step up to once KT Tunstall starts to bore.
